Alpinia Garden

Alpinia Garden

An alpine botanical garden with breathtaking views over Lake Maggiore

The Alpinia Botanical Garden is located in the Alpino district, a hamlet of Stresa, nestled on the slopes of Mount Mottarone overlooking the western shore of Lake Maggiore and facing the Borromean Gulf. Covering an area of approximately 40,000 m², the garden is home to over a thousand botanical species native to alpine and subalpine regions, as well as plants from the Caucasus, China, and Japan.

History

Officially established in 1934 by Igino Ambrosini and Giuseppe Rossi, the Alpinia Garden (originally known as "Duxia" until the end of the Fascist period) was one of the first alpine botanical gardens in Italy. Its creation immediately gained recognition, earning praise from both national and international naturalists and botanists.

«I have seen where Duxia was born, I have visited many beautiful places in Europe and America, and I declare that the Alpino viewpoint is the most beautiful in the world. Some have told me I exaggerate, but I deny the exaggeration.»
(Henry Correvon, 1934)

The garden is situated in a panoramic location of exceptional value, offering a natural terrace with a stunning viewpoint over Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands. Visitors can also admire breathtaking views of some peaks within the Val Grande National Park, including the Lepontine Alps, Monte Disgrazia, the Grigne mountain range, and Monte Legnone. Perched at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, the garden is easily accessible via the Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone cable car.

Inside the garden, a natural spring flows, dedicated to the renowned naturalist Marco De Marchi, founder of the Hydrobiological Institute of Pallanza.
